The day has been known as ‘Kargil Vijay Diwas,’ in honour of the soldiers who participated in Operation Vijay. The day commemorates Indian soldiers’ achievement in retaking mountain peaks seized by the Pakistani Army on July 26, 1999, during the Kargil War.
