Jagjivan Ram’s career in Indian politics and social causes spanned four decades. He was a pioneer in the fight for equality for all Indians even for the “untouchables”. This war led to the liberation of Bangladesh from Pakistani domination. And they were instrumental in getting many provisions of “social justice” in the Indian constitution.
He was an independent leader during the last years of British India and became the Minister of Labor in India’s first cabinet. Jagjivan Ram also held the important post of Defense Minister during the tense days of the Indo-Pakistani War of 1971.
